DEDICATED Formula 1 fans would have been up early on Sunday morning for the first race of the 2017 season, while some may have chosen to watch the repeat broadcast later that afternoon.

Whichever way you chose to watch the long-awaited and highly anticipated first race of 2017, you would have witnessed the possible beginning of the end of the Silver Arrows’ dominance, as Sebastian Vettel drove his Scuderia Ferrari home for a first place finish, claiming the chequered flag at the 2017 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the Silver Arrows Mercedes, who could only manage second place, some might say due to a badly timed pit stop, and Hamilton’s new teammate, Valterri Bottas, who finished in third, ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

Crowd favourite, Daniel Ricciardo, retired from the race, after a disastrous weekend of mechanical and electrical issues on the Red Bull at his home track, with an engine failure after only 25 of 57 laps.

“Sorry, mate. The car’s done,” said the Australian driver over the team radio as he left his Renault-powered Red Bull and headed back to the pits.

Just wanna say thanks to everyone who had my back this weekend. Support was on top through it all. Cheers

The next race, the 2017 Formula 1 Heineken Chinese Grand Prix, will take place in Shanghai on April 9.
