Unveiling of memorial on Wagon Hill

A decision to reciprocally honour each other’s fallen every year on Platrand Day, locally and in Britain, has been maintained ever since

The public, municipal officers and staff, and councillors are cordially invited to the unveiling of the new Memorial for Reconciliation on Wagon Hill, Platrand.

It is being erected on the terrain where the heroic charge of the Devonshire Regiment took place in an attempt to push back the tenacious Harrismith Commando on January 6, 1900.

Casualties on both sides were horrendous.

At the centenary of the Battle of Platrand, both units returned to the battlefield independently to honour their fallen comrades. A chance meeting took place which developed into a lasting friendship. A decision taken at the time to reciprocally honour each other’s fallen every year on Platrand Day (January 6), locally and in Britain, has been maintained ever since.

The memorial, designed by local architect Johan Mathee, consists of two triangles juxta-positioned to signify a perfect unit not yet achieved.

Take the road to Platrand Lodge off the R103 and follow the signs for 4km.

Dress code: Suit with medals / uniform / traditional. Kindly register any wreaths by 2.30pm.

Seats to be taken by 2.45pm.

The ceremony starts at 3pm.
