Winners of Wakkerstroom’s Children’s Art Competition

This year children were encouraged to use their creativity and were asked to submit art to the theme of ‘Hand and Footprints’.

WAKKERSTROOM’S Art and Craft Competition for children is growing. This year children were encouraged to use their creativity and were asked to submit art to the theme of ‘Hand and Footprints’. On Youth Day, a number of local Wakkerstroomers and some visitors were given supplies and guided by Carol and Kristi to produce an entry for the competition! These were added to those that were hand delivered by parents or children themselves, and other entries which came from Country College in Volksrust.

The public cast their votes until June 17 when the votes were counted. Parents of the top five children were contacted, and two children were able to receive their prizes when the winners were announced at 3pm.

We were proud to receive so many more entries this year, and the winning prize went to Hayley Laverack of Wakkerstroom. Hayley is 11-years-old and currently passionate about sketching horses.

Part of the substantial prize she received was a session with many well-known artists, who will coach Hayley and hopefully ignite her passion further.

1st Prize: Hayley Laverack

2nd Prize: Thembi Shiba

3rd Prize: Faith Spinghall

4th Prize: Ubaadah Chotia

5th Prize: Samkelisiwe Nkosi

Gordon Froud, the Art and Craft Ramble festival artist and lecturer at University of Johannesburg, wished to give a special mention to Samkelisiwe, who is a Grade 1 student at Country College. He was very impressed with the quality of her entry, and believes that she has huge potential in the future. So, Hayley and Samkelisiwe, we are watching what you do next year!

Thanks to our generous sponsors of the children’s prizes this year. We are ever so grateful!
