iDance dances its way to TV

The two local dancers started to pursue their dream in 2010, shortly after matriculating.

For hip-hop dancers, Xolani Msiya and Aubrey Molefe, their dream of being catapulted into the world of entertainment is well on its way.

The two local dancers started to pursue their dream in 2010, shortly after matriculating.

“We started chasing our dream straight after school, as we knew we were good and believed it was something to invest in,” said Molefe.

The first step in their dream was forming their dance crew, which they named iDance.

“The ‘i’ represents all dance styles, as we realised early on we had to combine all the styles of dancing in order to stand out from other crews,” Msiya explained.

In 2013, the duo took to dancing as a full-time career and performed at functions.

Through their dance performances and posts on social media, they were soon discovered.

“We recently got a call from a producer who worked at the SABC who saw one of our videos on Instagram. He then invited us to participate in a hip hop show called Break the Beat on SABC1,” said Molefe.

The duo were given two days to make their way to Durban to audition and perform for the television channel.

“We had no money for the trip and started looking for help,” said Msiya.

The two fortunately found financial assistance and made their way to Durban, where they faced an overwhelming amount of obstacles.

“The money we received was only enough for the trip there, and we had to hustle for a place to stay during our week long stay,” Msiya explained.

The show had them competing against dance crews from across the country and they made it to the semi-finals. but, Unfortunately, they did not reach the finals.

“We are hoping to go bigger, which we believe is possible after South Africa sees us perform on SABC1.

Eventually, we would also like to begin a dance academy, where we can teach the youth the beauty of dancing,” said Molefe.

Newcastillians are encouraged to watch SABC1 every Sunday at 6pm to watch iDance perform.
