JUST IN: Shiva statue arrives in Newcastle – (GALLERY)
Over two days, the Murthi was escorted from Durban to Newcastle as an abnormal load due to its size and weight.
Almost a year of planning, fundraising and hours of hard work, the four metre high Shiva statue was delivered to the Siva Subramanian Temple in Suryaville yesterday morning, (February 27).
From its inception the project proved successful, as the two metre base for the murthi on the temple premises, was completed by September 2017.
The Murthi was constructed by a contractor in Durban, who is famous for his life size creations of Hindu deities.
Over two days, the Murthi was escorted from Durban to Newcastle as an abnormal load due to its size and weight. Once erected, the impressive structure will stand at six metres, weighing between 20 and 25 tons, made up of concrete and steel.
Lord Shiva is one of the principal deities in Hinduism, and part of the trinity with Brahman and Vishnu. Lord Shiva is believed to remove devotees from the illusionary world of Kama, Krodha, Moha, Madha and Lobha, making them realise who they are, as well as what their true purpose in life is.
Lord Shiva’s destructive power has a purifying effect on an universal level.
As Lord Shiva represents the essence of impeccable goodness and godliness, he is worshipped with reverence.
The temple committee extend its thanks to the community of Newcastle, for its contributions, support and assistance in making this project a success.
The official unveiling of the Murthi will take place at a religious ceremony on a date soon to be announced.
