Devotees pray for peace and prosperity at annual Inder Pooja

In times of tribulation, people of faith turn to prayer.

For a large number of devotees, the 18th annual Inder Pooja and Maha Yajna was an opportunity to unite for the sake of Newcastle and surrounds, at the corner of Dixon and St Thomas Streets in Lennoxton.

Proceedings got underway with a ‘peace walk’.

This was followed by the main prayer, for rain, grain, health, peace and prosperity, officiated by Shree Sanathan Dharma Hindu priests from Newcastle, Dannhauser and Dundee.

Devotees grouped around open fires for the hawan.

Following the writings in the Vedas, ghee (clarified butter) and samagree were added to the sacred fire to begin a cycle of condensation and vapourisation, believed to lead to rain.

During this process, 1 008 mantras were recited.

After the recital, the Shree Sanathan Dharma Hindu priests moved down to the banks of the nearby river to complete the rites and rituals.

Thereafter lunch was served to conclude the formalities.
