5 things to do for free in Estcourt and surrounding areas

This holiday season, there are many things to do for free in the Estcourt area

The holiday season can become quite costly over the December period, especially in these trying economic times. However, there are many ways that you can enjoy yourself on a budget.

Whether you are a visitor or a local staying at home this holiday, here are five things that won’t cost you a cent but will still offer you a one-of-a-kind experience.

1. Want to get your fingers dusty while taking a walk through time? Then best you make a stop at Fort Durnford.

Built in 1874, the fort is a former frontier post and houses dozens of interesting relics and artefacts. Don’t forget to visit the haunted underground tunnel and check out the prized bird egg collection.

2. If fishing, fun in the sun and sport floats your boat, then make a stop at Lambert Park.

The shady trees, expansive grounds and good fishing opportunities make for a perfect day trip. While you’re there, be sure to walk down to the waterfalls and experience a refreshing splash.

3. The cats and dogs at the Estcourt Animal Shelter always welcome visitors and more especially a human touch. The friendly staff members are available to assist if you decide on an adoption. And while you’re there, go on, give a cat a cuddle!

4. Historic hotspots are peppered throughout the Midlands areas.

From the sight of the Battle of Willowgrange on the R103 to the monument to soldiers in Alexandra Street, if you’re a history boffin, you will find plenty of pleasurable places to visit.

5. Want to keep up your fitness during the festivities. Run or walk in a safe and accessible athletic track at Forderville Primary School. Close by there are also tennis and basketball facilities.
