Art Doctor kicks off first event

Dr Mhlambi said there was immense art still undiscovered in the world.

Cultural innovator, cellist and music composer, Dr Thokozani Mhlambi, encouraged young artists to open themselves to bigger ideas in the world of art.

Dr Mhlambi said there was immense art still undiscovered in the world.

“You will usually find that many people who study art only aspire for familiar creative fields. They want to be radio djs, music rappers or actors, and that’s because it is what they are constantly exposed to. Through our talks, we want to change that narrative and show emerging artists there is more outside of what is familiar to you.”

Afropolitan Explosiv held an artist seminar on February 28 at Blackrock Casino. The seminar was the first part of an on-going project to host professional artists, where they participate in a public conversation with the community, discussing their artistic practice and showcasing their art.

Johannesburg based artist, Thobe of Heart, engaged last week with a small number of people about how he viewed art:

“I am a writer but while growing up I was drawn into hip-hop music because that is what I heard everyday. As I educated myself more, I realised there is a lot I could immerse myself in besides what was already presented to me in the world of art. I started teaching myself how to mix different genres of music. I want to especially emphasise that there is more to art than natural mainstream art.”

As the founder and creator of Afropolitan Explosiv, Dr Mhlambi said the non-profit organisation wants to offer the local community a fresh perspective on how to view art.

“We want to give young artists in the Amajuba community an opportunity to interact and learn from experienced artists. I consider my role in society as a cultural innovator. There is actually a lot that is involved in art other than what you already see on television. You can act on Broadway theatre, you can be a film director or you can be a music composer in a movie.”

The Afropolitan Explosiv art talks will be held on the first Friday of each month. All interested persons are encouraged to attend and explore different art styles and expressions.
