Racers chase the chequered flag at SA Dirt National Championship
From as early as 9am, more than 144 drivers were seen in the pits offloading their racing machines from the trailers and tuning them in preparation for the ‘big day’.

For the first time in local history, the Newcastle Oval Track played hosted to the World of Motorsport ZA (WOMZA) SA Dirt National Championship 2019 on Saturday.
After months of preparation and planning, the Oval Track club members pulled out all the stops to ensure an event of this magnitude was a success.
Racers and their families from as far as Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Randfontein and more arrived in town to compete for the big prizes.
From as early as 9am, more than 144 drivers were seen in the pits offloading their racing machines from the trailers and tuning them in preparation for the ‘big day’.
Food and merchandise vendors were among the stall holders offering guests a full race-day experience, while racers refueled their cars and recharged their energy levels.
The following Newcastle Oval Track members achieved South African numbers in their respective classes:
Wikie Bezuidenhout – SA3 in the 1660 class
Hendrik van der Merwe – SA3 in the Hotrod class
Charlie Rothman – SA2 in the 1660 class.
Races went on well into the wee hours of Sunday morning and overall, the event proved a resounding success and a proud achievement for Newcastle Oval Track.
“Newcastle Motorsport Club thanks its sponsors, with special mention of title sponsor, Midas Newcastle,” said club member, Zaakira Khan.
“A heartfelt thanks to all the members, committee and their families who assisted in making this event possible. A huge thank you to Flip Gericke for his time and efforts put in,” added Khan.
