N1 closure due to protest action

Reduce speed when approaching detours.

The N1 highway passing Winburg is currently subject to momentary full closure due to ongoing community unrest in the area.

Protesters are attempting to obstruct the N1 South carriageway using rocks, burning debris, and street barricades.

According to police spokersperson, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, disruptions began around 15:00, following the conclusion of a community meeting led by the Free State Premier.  Public Order Policing (POP) units are deployed on-site and actively managing the situation to clear the roadway and restore order.

All motorists traveling Southbound toward Bloemfontein are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and divert away from Winburg and take the Theunissen turn-off to bypass the Winburg area/

Reduce speed when approaching detours, and follow all instructions from traffic officials and SAPS personnel on the scene, Kareli said.
