Candidate nomination submissions closed
Registered South African citizens will cast their vote on November 4 in the Local Government Elections.
Registered Independent Candidates and Political Parties who intended to contest the 2026 Local Government Elections had until today, 28 August, to capture and submit their Candidate Nomination information.
The candidate nomination period has now closed, and no new submissions can be made, and changes or withdrawals will not be permitted.

What happens next?
The closure of nominations marks the beginning of the candidate nomination review and finalisation process.
Election timeline
- 4–7 September: Acceptance of Nominations: The IEC will process and verify submitted candidate nominations.
- 7 September marks the cut-off for Independent Candidates and Political Parties to submit outstanding ID copies and/or signed acceptance of nominations required to complete the nomination process.
- 9 & 11 September: Refinement of Party Lists: Political parties will have an opportunity, within the prescribed process, to refine their submitted party lists.
