Eskom advises customers in the Free State to remain alert as warnings for severe thunderstorms are in place across the province. The warning is linked to a cut-off low-pressure system, which may bring heavy downpours, strong winds, hail, and excessive lightning today and tomorrow. These conditions may result in localised damage to electricity infrastructure and interruptions to supply.

Widespread inclement weather conditions have already affected electricity supply in various parts of the province. Since last night, numerous power lines have been impacted, while ongoing adverse weather continues to hamper restoration efforts.

In the early hours of this morning, the Melkspruit–Rouxville 66kV breaker tripped due to severe damage to a wooden pole structure. This resulted in a loss of supply to Rouxville, Smithfield and Zastron, with the estimated restoration time still unknown.

Weather-related faults are also being experienced in other areas of the province.

Eskom’s technical teams remain committed to restoring electricity supply as soon as possible; however, restoration work can only proceed when it is safe to do so. Multiple faults also place pressure on available resources, while wet terrain can make it more difficult to access affected areas.

Customers are urged to report faults and unsafe conditions through Eskom’s reporting channels and to stay away from fallen or damaged power lines and electrical infrastructure, as these may remain live and pose a serious danger. Members of the public should not attempt to remove, touch or approach damaged electrical equipment and should report any incidents to Eskom immediately.
