HEAL-ing one young man at a time
HEAL has a long-term goal of reaching all of South Africa.
Gender equality and equity have been sensitive and essential topics of discussion for decades. Despite numerous debates and proposed solutions aimed at creating a balanced and equal society, significant gaps remain. While there has been remarkable progress in empowering women and girls, the boy child has been left behind, often neglected in the broader conversation.
This neglect has contributed to severe societal issues, including high rates of suicide among men, widespread mental health challenges, gender-based violence, and a pervasive sense of alienation. Many men grow up feeling as though they lack a sense of belonging in their communities. This is why HEAL was founded—to provide young boys with the care, mentorship, and nurturing they need to grow into well-rounded men who positively impact society.
On December 14th 2024, HEAL successfully launched its inaugural event in Vredefort, Free State. This event hosted 40 boys, providing 32 of them with toiletries, stationery, and a copy of the book Dear Child. Additionally, all 40 boys received meals on the day. Building on this success, HEAL plans to host monthly or bi-monthly meetings to provide consistent support and mentorship to these boys.
HEAL is a nonprofit mentorship program fostering a society where boys and men embark on their own healing journeys, addressing unresolved traumas from boyhood. This dual approach ensures a two-way benefit: men mentor boys while simultaneously finding healing and support in a trusted community.
“The vision of HEAL is simple yet profound: Healing manhood by mentoring and empowering boys to grow with confidence, integrity, and purpose. Our mission is to provide mentorship, guidance, and resources that empower boys to navigate and overcome life’s challenges, enabling them to grow into confident, purpose-driven men of integrity who positively contribute to their communities. While the program focuses on boys, our ultimate aim is to mentor and equip boys to navigate life with resilience, skills, and values, fostering confidence and purpose. Through holistic guidance, we empower boys to grow and mature physically, emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually, while creating a safe space where vulnerability is embraced, and strength is redefined. Our goal is to nurture wholesome individuals who embody integrity, compassion, and a commitment to positively impact their communities,” Kelebohile Mganga for HEAL said in a statement.
In 2025, HEAL will expand its programs to Fezile Dabi (Free State), Katlehong (Gauteng), the Eastern Cape, and Limpopo, with a long-term goal of reaching all of South Africa. They aim to partner with government agencies, the private sector, and international organizations like the United Nations to ensure the program’s sustainability and impact.
