Task Force board restored at Wondergat
The board was designed in such a way that it slides over the original board making it effortless and eliminating some of the risks involved with the dive.
“You have never lived till you almost died and for those who fight for it life has a flavour the Protected will never know”
These are the famous words that is written on the SAP Special Task Force Board that has been
placed at the bottom of Wondergat on May 28, 1981 by Task Force Members: Jaco van
Sckalkwyk, Tienie Strydom, Mick Fryer, Japie Blom, Tony Bester, Obie Oberhotzer, Eddie Mollier,
Roelf Pretorius, Snor Vermeulen, Johan De Bruto, Derek Dercksen, Danie Le Roux, Duppie Du Plessis and Oupa Swanepoel.
Throughout the years the words started fading and the board stood empty at 51m. Philip Aucamp and Herman Coetzer, ex Class IV Commercial Police Divers decided that it would be a nice gesture to restore the Board and continue the Legacy of these SAP Special Task Force. They took the lead in getting the necessary permission to do this.
A dive was executed to get the measurements of the original board. A board was designed by Philip together with Highway Signs in Carletonville. It was designed in such a way that it slides over the original board making it effortless and eliminating some of the risks involved with the dive.
The official Restoration took place on Saturday March 29, whereby Members of the Task Force
Association and Divers from all over the country got together for the Special Event.
A Dive Team from West Wits Sub Aqua executed the Dive at 11:12, whereby the Task Board was successfully restored and locked in place and the Divers were all safe.
