The Democratic Alliance (DA) called on the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) to immediately address the escalating safety risks on Vereeniging Drive in Bloemfontein.
“We urge the management to install speed bumps and stop signs at high-risk intersections, particularly at the corner of Wewer and Vereeniging Drive.  It is also critical to repaint all road markings and signage to improve visibility at night. “
Since the bridge’s opening in May 2023, the road has become notorious for reckless driving, speeding, and dangerous conditions, the DA said.
Numerous serious accidents have occurred, resulting in property damage and serious injuries to drivers and pedestrians.
The situation is made even more dangerous by the faded road markings, traffic signs that are not visible at night, and the absence of fencing along the road, which allows livestock to wander freely into traffic.
Uncontrolled truck traffic has become a serious issue, with trucks using the area near Checkers Hyper as an informal truck stop.
There is also a worrying lack of visible law enforcement to monitor or control traffic in the area, says the DA.
Despite raising several urgent issues during this engagement with the mayoral committee, we are still awaiting a follow-up meeting to receive feedback and details on the action plans that will be implemented to address these concerns, the DA said in a statement.
The party suggests that open areas along the road must be adequately fenced to prevent livestock from wandering into traffic, and traffic officials should be deployed during peak hours to regulate traffic flow and deter reckless driving.
“Most importantly, the MMM must do a comprehensive road safety audit to identify and implement long-term safety solutions,” the DA concluded.
