Soccer players’ initiative for library clean-up praised

For these youngsters it was their way of giving back to the community.

Soccer players from the Elite Athletics Football Club in Parys’ recent initiative to give back
to the community with a clean-up campaign at the town’s library, made a huge and visible difference for those who use this facility.

According to team manager Eddy Mahlathi, the club regularly holds meetings at the library, and many of the players also make use of the facility for studying.

“We felt it was important to show our appreciation by contributing towards much needed maintenance,” he said.

The players, who come from areas including Vredefort, Vanderbijlpark, Koppies, Parys, Tumahole, Kopanong, Sebokeng and Sasolburg, worked together to clean the premises, cut the grass and paint the palisade fencing. All the materials were funded by themselves.

“For these young players, it’s about giving back to the community,” Mahlathi added.

The Elite Athletics Football Club forms part of the Elite Athletics Sport Academy, which makes use of the sports grounds next to the library. The academy also assists in keeping the grounds neat and well-maintained.

The club expressed its appreciation to the municipality’s Director of Community Services for recently providing a tractor to assist with cleaning the sports field.
