Tumahole schools celebration – education at the centre of commemoration
The celebration formed part of the Foundation's ongoing Tumahole Heritage Project
The Edgar Legoale Foundation, in partnership with the Department of Education, commemorated Tumahole Day through the Tumahole Schools Celebration on Friday.
The celebration formed part of the Foundation’s ongoing Tumahole Heritage Project – an initiative dedicated to documenting, preserving and promoting the stories of the men and women whose courage, sacrifice and leadership shaped the history of Tumahole.
The Tumahole Schools Celebration was initiated with the belief that preserving local history begins with educating young people.
“As generations pass, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that learners understand the significance of the events that shaped their community and recognise the individuals whose contributions laid the foundation for the Tumahole they know today. By bringing heritage into schools through research, storytelling and artistic expression, the Foundation is investing in a generation that understands its past, appreciates its identity and is inspired to shape a brighter future,” Foundation chairperson, Mr Edgar Legoale said.
This year’s programme was designed to place education at the centre of the commemoration.
The event started with a commemorative march from the Tumahole Old Taxi Rank to Phehellang Secondary School, where learners participated in debate, public speaking, praise poetry, A Cappella, gumboot dance, solo performances, folklore, cultural performances, drum majorettes and brass band performances.
A unique feature of this year’s celebration was the allocation of local heritage figures, researched and presented by participating schools through Public Speaking and Praise Poetry presentations, ensuring that the stories of these individuals continue to educate and inspire future generations.
Learners of Boitlamo Secondary School, Sindekile Primary School, Phehellang Secondary School, Aha-Setjhaba Primary School, Ntshwephepha Primary School, Lister Skosana School, A.M. Lembede Primary School, Barnard Molokoane Technical School, Yakhisizwe Secondary School, Schonkenville Combined School and Botjhabatsatsi Primary School took part in the day’s programme.
