Kings of Leon is one of the world is most famous rock bands, with good reason. Their music has taken different paths, starting out as a Southern rock band in 2000 and developing into a bigger arena, rock-style band this decade. The band is also one of a few groups to consist entirely of siblings. Caleb (vocals, guitar), Jared (bass guitar) and Nathan Followill (drums) are brothers, while the lead guitarist, Matthew, is their cousin.
5. Red Morning Light
Red Morning Light may not be one of Kings of Leon’s most popular songs, but it still packs a punch with its guitar-driven intro followed by Caleb Followill’s wailing vocals. The song also has a mesmerising western-style solo from Matthew Followill that will get you dancing to the tune. The chord structure is also very simple and makes the song flow easily. Also, keep an ear out for Caleb’s wail at the end of the song.

4. Use Somebody
This is the song that shot Kings of Leon into mainstream success in an absolute instant. The song reminds me of something that U2 would be able to produce – still, it keeps that old Kings of Leon charm found in their previous albums. The song is ambitious and shows the band’s ability to evolve with the times and to push their own boundaries. This arena rock song is one of the classics and will be played for years to come – it cements their legacy.

3. Knocked Up
One of my favourite Kings of Leon songs is this gem, found on their 2007 album Be-cause of the Times. The 7-minute long song has one of the best opening instrumental intros in its genre. The drums begin a beat, followed by the bass guitar that bounces off that beat. The harmonics from Matthew’s lead guitar then join the party before the rhythm guitar and vocals of Caleb’s enter the show. The main narrative of the song is about love and the consequences of unplanned pregnancy: “I don’t care what nobody says, we are gonna have a baby.” The outro of the song is also brilliantly done. Definitely worth a listen.

2. Wait for Me
“It’s all better now, it’s all better now, wait for me, wait for me!” is the memorable chorus from this song that really stands out above other slow tempo Kings of Leon songs. The emotion and drive can be directly felt from Caleb’s voice. The guitar riff is also really melodic and adds great gloss to the song.

1.The Bucket
This is the quintessential Kings of Leon song, especially if you are an old-school fan – in other words when all the band members still had long hair and rougher and raw sounds. The song has a great melody and killer drum sections that keep the song ticking on. The main narrative behind the song focuses on the youngest member of the band, Jared, and how the other band members have always protected him and been at his side in the music industry. A great song about family bonds and brotherhood.
