NWU student disrupts R and O-programme with anti-LGBTQIA+ agenda

The senior student that caused the disruption is temporarily suspended whilst the NWU is busy conducting an investigation.

A senior student of the North-West University (NWU) Potchefstroom Campus has been temporarily suspended after disrupting a Registration and Orientation session on 6 February 2024 when he expressed disapproval towards LGTBQIA+ content in the programme.

The incident occurred during a session addressing rights of persons living with disabilities, environmental sustainability awareness, LGBTQIA+ community matters and psychological fitness.

The NWU sent out a press release on Thursday, 8 February, stating that the student acted in a disruptive manner and did not respect the rights of other students and audience members. It is further stated that the senior student’s actions caused confusion during which a majority of the audience left the session.

“The NWU prides itself on being a diverse and inclusive institution which allows constructive discourse on all matters irrespective of race, religion, culture, or gender/sexual orientation. We strongly condemn any actions where these fundamental rights of association and expression are infringed upon.”

The NWU further reiterated that they view the incident in a very serious light.

“Hence, we immediately commenced an investigation. Consequently, the student in question has been temporarily suspended for his disruptive behaviour, pending the finalisation of the investigation.”

The NWU also added that the orientation of first-year students are important and needs to cover all relevant subjects pertaining the NWU as it is where they will be for the next few years.

“The NWU, as stated before, is a proudly diverse institution and the first year students need be made familiar with that. We will continue to allow our staff and students to share and offer advice regarding matters that are relevant for the university community and society in general. Students who feel that their rights are violated or disrespected should make use of the various reporting mechanisms including the thoughts and complaints lines, or the offices of the Directors of Student Life on our campuses.”
