Mediclinic Potchefstroom Celebrates 30 Years of Excellence
From humble beginnings in 1995 to a state-of-the-art 197-bed facility, Mediclinic Potchefstroom marks three decades of medical innovation, specialist growth, and unwavering commitment to compassionate healthcare.
In 1995, Mediclinic Potchefstroom opened its doors with a simple yet powerful vision: to deliver world-class, patient-centred healthcare to the community of Potchefstroom and surrounding areas. From those early days, when the hospital mainly offered general medical, surgical, and maternity services, it quickly established itself as a trusted lifeline. Importantly, it was the first private hospital in the region to provide 24-hour emergency services.
“As our community has expanded, so has our hospital. In the early 2000s, the hospital introduced its first specialised units, including Intensive Care and High Care, and enlarged its theatre complex to accommodate more advanced surgical procedures. Mediclinic Potchefstroom continued investing in innovative healthcare. Through strategic partnerships with Dr Laubscher & Partners Diagnostic Radiologists, we were able to offer our patients and doctors cutting-edge diagnostic imaging equipment such as CT and MRI scanners,” explains Danie Scholtz, Hospital General Manager.
The following years saw further development of specialised care. “Thanks to the establishment of a primary oncology service in collaboration with leading specialists, patients no longer need to travel long distances for advanced cancer treatment,” Scholtz elaborates.
The 2020 pandemic tested the hospital’s adaptability and resilience, but the staff and doctors rose to the challenge. Dedicated isolation wards were created, and new pulmonology services strengthened the fight against respiratory illness.
Growth along the continuum of care continued, with the provision of acute renal dialysis in hospital and the opening of a chronic renal dialysis unit in 2022 for patients living with chronic kidney disease. The introduction of neurosurgery services — a milestone that broadened the scope of specialised care available locally.
Now, Mediclinic Potchefstroom proudly celebrates three decades of excellence and dedicated care. With nearly 200 beds, the hospital offers a comprehensive range of facilities, including Neonatal and Adult Intensive Care, a 24-hour Emergency Centre, a dedicated Maternity Ward, Paediatric services, and a modern Theatre Complex.
Specialist care covers fields such as internal medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric cardiology, dermatology and reconstructive surgery, supported by on-site radiology, pathology, nuclear medicine and a team of allied health professionals, such as dieticians and physiotherapists.
“Through every stage of growth, one thing has never changed: Mediclinic Potchefstroom’s commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care. As the hospital looks ahead, our promise remains clear — to continue investing in advanced technology, expanding specialist services, and serving the community with excellence and compassion for decades to come,” Scholtz concludes.
