Mother and child killed in hit-and-run

A mother and child were killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident on the Viljoenskroon road outside Potchefstroom on Tuesday night.

According to the ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, the mother and her child, believed to be a 3-year-old, tried to cross the road when a large vehicle collided with them. A second vehicle subsequently also hit them. According to eyewitnesses, the first vehicle drove away.

“In the early hours of the evening, paramedics were called to the scene and found both the mother and child had sustained extensive and fatal injuries. There was nothing that they could do and they declared them dead on the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident will be investigated; local authorities attended the scene.”

According to Major Funani, the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
