Residents of Embalenhle in Secunda were forced to tolerate human waste and stinking sewage running down their streets and properties for two years, said Congress of the People in a statement on Saturday.
Here are some of sewage incidents that have affected Potchefstroom residents in the past:
Riool ‘oorval’ gesin in erf ( April 29, 2016)
Riool lek op die hoek van Promosa weg en Read straat (February 3, 2016)
According to Cope spokesperson Dennis Bloem, a little stream of sewage neglected by the Mpumalanga government two years ago has now turned into something huge. The stream that runs straight to the Vaal River has contaminated the river.
“According to residents, the blocked system started by pouring out human waste into the local properties before becoming the river that today floods their streets,” Bloem explained.
Bloem says the ‘human waste’ problem in the area was raised during Cope’s recent door-to-door campaign when one of the residents told the party that they have been “living in this terrible condition for years now and their government does not care about our health. Garbage has also piled up our streets for years”.
“We don’t need these self-serving leaders anymore, honestly, this is not right, we are humans, we can’t be expected to live like pigs,” said another resident.
Bloem says parents in the area are worried because their children are forced to walk over the stinking sewage water and human waste when going to school. Children can’t even play outside their homes because there is dirt everywhere.
“Cope it is very disturbed with this situation but once again shows that the ANC is not concerned about the wellbeing of residents in this area,” Bloem said.
