Whereas starting or enlarging a family is mostly a joyous occasion, it some-times happens that the baby is born prematurely or ill. While the dedicated nurses of the Potchefstroom Hospital neonatal intensive care unit do everything in their power to assist the babies through their difficult start in life, funding and resources are very limited. The Lions Club of Potchefstroom has, therefore, decided to adopt Potchefstroom Hospital’s neonatal ICU and assist the nurses, on an ongoing basis, to provide the necessary care to these babies.
To celebrate Youth Day 2016, Lions members delivered a large donation of toiletries, winter clothes, and blankets to the unit. The toiletries and clothing will be used to care for the babies during their stay in the ward. However, on the joyous day that mothers get to take their babies home, the nurses will be able to send them off with a soft, new baby blanket to keep their little ones warm and healthy during the following cold winter months.
Lions Club Potchefstroom also believes that, in caring for the babies, the well-being of the mothers is also of great importance. Undeniably, these mothers have to cope with a great amount of stress, while their babies are fighting for their little lives in the ICU. The Lions Club has, therefore, also deemed it fit to treat the mothers who stay over at the unit with their babies, with soap, face cloths, and magazines.
Also, in honour of Youth Day, the Lions Club Potchefstroom’s young lion cubs accompanied Lions members to Potchefstroom Hospital for this project. They assisted in handing over the hampers and got the opportunity to find out what it means to care for the needs of the community. Lions Club Potchefstroom is very proud of these youngsters who, at such young ages, have revealed a heart of giving.
Lions Club Potchefstroom would like to thank DisChem Potchefstroom for the overwhelming support towards this project.
