Teenagers make a difference through radio

Nomonde and Karabelo Chabeletsane, both 16, aren’t your regular teenage siblings.

Nomonde and Karabelo Chabeletsane, both 16, aren’t your regular teenage siblings. No, instead of going home and hanging out with their friends after school, they prefer to go to the station, set up their sound and start talking to hundreds of young people throughout Ikageng.
They talk about life and education and how to live a healthy and safe life as a teenager in Potchefstroom and its surroundings.
Nomonde and Karabelo are two of the presenters for the radio programme featured on Aganang FM. The shows called Ghetto Genius and Learners Connect, are part of an initiative of CRF (Children Radio Foundation) and aim to empower children to stand up for what’s right and make a difference in others lives through the use of radio.
Firstly, the children involved in this programme have to do extremely well at school to be able to become a presenter. On the show, they talk about actual issues like child molesting, alcohol and drug abuse, teen suicide and emotional abuse to educational tips on how to study correctly and how to do assignments.
On the show, they have conversations and, behind the scenes, they interview specialists on different issues, getting opinions or creating vox pops.
Nomonde says they dream of this programme continuing in the future so that they can carry on changing the lives of young people and children in and around Potchefstroom. Tune in to Aganang FM 90.0 Saturdays from 15:00 to 15:30 for Ghetto Genius and Learners Connect and like their Facebook pages.
