The community of Hlala in Kanana is steadfast in its refusal to relocate because of the dolomite risk in the area. They would rather have the NW405 municipality benchmark with Merafong when it comes to building houses in dolomitic areas.
The community waged a two-day protest last week, burning tyres, barricading roads with stones and damaging property.
According to one of the community leaders, Lydia Sithebe, the community has requested a second opinion about the dolomitic land. ‘We do not want the Ages report,’ says Lydia. In last week’s Herald, the people said they have been staying on the land for 27 years and there is no dolomite risk.’
Some of the demands raised by the community are that the RDP houses for the approved stands must be built.
‘The people do not want to relocate; they will stay even though the municipality says there is a dolomite risk. We still want to know what the municipality intends to do with this land if they want to move the people.
‘The mayor promised to meet with a provincial delegation to discuss the situation. We will wait for that,’ says Lydia.
