A 29-year-old man, Thapelo Mokgobo, briefly appeared in the Potchefstroom magistrate’s court on Tuesday on charges of possession of explosives, dealing in explosives and transportation of explosives.

The case was postponed to 21 August 2018 for a formal bail application.

According to NW Hawks spokesperson, Capt Tlangelani Rikhotso, an intelligence-driven operation by the NW Hawks Firearm Task Team in collaboration with Potchefstroom Crime Intelligence led to Mokgobo’s (29) arrest on Monday.

The Ikageng police spokesperson, Sgt Kelebogile Trom, confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was arrested near U-Save Supermarket at about 12:38. Rikhotso added that the suspect was arrested following a tip-off that he had been arranging to sell detonators to a prospective buyer for R3000. ‘Hawks members followed up on the information and found the suspect in possession of the explosive devices and the money. Subsequently, he was arrested,’ said Rikhotso.
