Police urge residents to be cautious following several cases of theft that have been reported.
According to Warrant Officer Mpho Manyoba, police spokesperson, there have been several cases reported of common robbery, robbery with a weapon, or with a firearm, and most of them originate from people withdrawing money.
“Victims are robbed by individuals who pretend to be working for banks, with the motive to rob them of their money,” said Manyoba.
Police urge the public that while they are at the ATM, they should not ask for someone to assist them and to not accept help from people who offer their assistance.
Manyoba further advises the public that they must be careful of notifications they receive informing them of prizes that they have won, especially if they did not enter the competition.
Police advise students to be aware of leaving their belongings in a place where they visible. “This can lead to them breaking into their apartments or cars,” she said.
For example, when devices such as cell phones, laptops or even bags are left next to a slightly open window, or in the front- and back seats of the car. “They (students) must physically ensure that their cars and apartments are locked and secure,” said Manyoba.
She also mentioned that there has been an increase in the theft of bicycles. “The police continue to make the public aware that bicycles are a target around town and the CBD (central business district) so they must be locked,” she stated.
