Bail application for murder suspect postponed

A 29-year-old man’s bail application has been postponed to Friday, 27 March.

A 29-year-old man’s bail application has been postponed to Friday, 27 March.

Kevin Maponyane has been charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms. His bail hearing started on Monday, 23 March. It was postponed because the defence lawyer and the state had asked to address the magistrate. Warrant Officer Kevin Pretorius, the investigation officer, said “In the address, the defence and state argued why the suspect should or shouldn’t get bail. The magistrate might take a day or two to make the decision and will give the final judgment on Friday (27 March).”

Maponyane was arrested on Tuesday, 10 March, for the possession of unlicensed firearms and stolen goods.

According to Col Adele Myburgh, these firearms were discovered at his home after the police conducted a search. This followed a tip-off from community members.

Maponyane is also facing charges for four other crimes, for which he was released on bail. The charges include two of murder and two separate cases of being in possession of unlicensed firearms.
