With the 21-day national lockdown, many services have been put on hold, but one can still give a departed loved one a dignified funeral.

The local municipality has implemented stricter preventative measures to limit the spread of Covid-19, adhering to the declaration of the lockdown.

Funeral services can still take place but under specific compliance requirements.

In a statement issued by the government, funeral undertakers and bereaved families must meet the following requirements:

• The municipality must pre-approve the transportation for and during a funeral service, the procession and other forms of gatherings related to the funeral. A written application should be submitted to the disaster management centre for consent.

• The procession and service must be concluded within an hour.

• The family must follow the burial times the cemetery caretaker issues.

• The existing regulations and the limit to the number of mourners (50 members max), must be adhered to. Only immediate relatives are encouraged to be present.

• No municipal facilities may be used for funeral services.

• The cemetery office will be open from 09:00 to 12:00 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for admin and grave bookings.
