Two men, aged 41 and 26, were arrested in Eyethu Street for the possession of suspected explosives.
According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the police spokesperson, the Potchefstroom Public Order Policing (POP) sub-unit based in Stilfontein, were busy with their patrols in Ikageng around 11:50 on Wednesday, 20 May. They saw a man walking down the street carrying a black school bag.
“The police noticed that the unidentified man started walking faster when he saw the police. He then began to run and fled into a yard,” said Trom.
The police became suspicious and started chasing after him. They entered the yard and found the man in the kitchen of a house. The police then requested to search the man’s school bag as the suspected explo-sives were visible.
The officials found the suspected explosives in the bag and arrested the man and the other suspect who was present at the time.
“The SAPS explosive unit was called to the scene and took the suspected explosives for further verification. The investigation is underway,” Sgt Trom said.
