From the Editor: Ladies and gentleman I present Ikageng Rugby Development Club

Ikageng development Rugby Club has booked a place in the Neser-league semi finals this coming weekend.

Ikageng Rugby Development Club has booked a place in the Neser-league semi finals this coming weekend. This league represents some of the top club sides in the province. The other semi-finalist is also local, Potch Dorp rugby club will also contest for a spot in the final.

Both clubs have done marvelously in the league. Ikageng even going on to beat traditional powerhouse, Klerksdorp rugby club. Let us focus on Ikageng for a moment, the club only started in 2006, in an area where rugby is not traditionally played by a large majority of the population. Or so I thought, but the success of the club has shown, how wrong my assumption was.

According to the coach they have different age group levels at the club as well as a woman’s team. All this without any major sponsorship. This is what Rugby is all about, passion and love for the game. I have a deep love for the game of Rugby. In my opinion it is a game for everyone, whether you are big and slow or small and fast there is a place for everyone at the Rugby table.

The Ikageng Rugby Development Club has had a fantastic run in the Neser League, losing only one game en route to the semi-finals this weekend.

Nobody needs to be left out. Although admittedly it would be better to be big and fast. Jokes aside, some would look at Ikageng’s success as meteoric, overnight and possibly even a flash in the pan. But it seems that the chairperson of this club has been building and putting into place structures since the club’s inception.

Tireless work that has paid off in impressive fashion. This is not to say that other clubs are not putting in the work or don’t have proper structures in place, but Ikageng is a surprise package any way you slice it.

It would be great if they are supported by local businesses to ensure their forward momentum. If all goes according to plan, it will be an all Potch affair in the finals. Sponsors can’t afford to miss the bus on this opportunity to support our local rugby teams.
