On Saturday (11 September), after six weeks of asking for donations, the Scorpion Community Safety, in partnership with the Patriotic Alliance (PA), provided 500 people (400 children, 100 adults) in Promosa with a plate of food.
“We always feel obliged to give back to the community in any way we can,” Ulrich Jacobs, one of the committee members, said.
Since the launch of the organisation four months ago, many people in the community are still unaware that the organisation has the community’s best interests at heart. “There is often a stigma attached to the words, ‘community safety’; people often think we are violent,” Jacobs explained. “We wanted to create awareness by letting the community know we are on their side and that we are always willing to help whenever they need solutions to their problems.”
Jacobs said hundreds of children were attracted to the idea of becoming part of the initiative because they were familiar with them as a group.
“Although they are often overlooked, the children of the community have played a huge role in providing information during a case. Whenever they give us a bit of information, regardless of how small, we always reward them with a lollipop,” he added.
“Scorpion Community Safety has always been there for the youth. Although we are giving them a plate of food today, tomorrow it is the confidence of being able to speak to us about pressing issues within the community,” said Jacobs.
He explained that safety organisations usually ask the community for help when gathering information to solve crimes but seldom give back. “Many people in our communities don’t have food to eat, so it remains a priority to us to give back to the community in any way possible,” he said.
Jacobs reported that the event was a huge success; the highlight being the smiles on the children’s faces. Scorpion Community safety looks forward to assisting the community of Potchefstroom in the best way they possibly can and will continue to host events to give back.
“Although combating crime within our area is a large part of why we formed our group, we are also here to tackle other issues like hunger and counselling the broader community.”
“Thank you to all those who contributed to this great event; it will definitely not be the last. We will do whatever is right to help this community. May the Almighty grant us the opportunity to do more than just crime prevention and case solving. Let’s liberate the minds of our youth and develop a safe, clean environment,” the organisation said.
“We also wish to extend a big thank you to the PA and community at large,” they concluded.
