The heavy rainfall yesterday in Potchefstroom (Sunday, 2 January) has damaged numerous houses in the Ikageng and Promosa areas.
The J.B. Marks Disaster Management team has updated the public with news regarding the current mop-up operations in Potch. Structural damage to housing was one of the biggest concerns, although water has subsided in various parts of town.
“Water has subsided in all the hotspot areas where the roads were closed due to flooding has subsided and traffic is flowing normally. The Municipal teams are on the ground assessing damage that has been reported in
some homes. Thus, far five cases of family homes in Ikageng and Promosa areas
have been reported to have been damaged,” stated the J.B. Marks Municipality press release.
“The damages range from water that has encroached into the houses to roofs that have caved in as a result of the flash floods. The Municipality will determine what kind of assistance can be provided ranging from
salvage sheets to matrasses and blankets. In extreme situations, the Municipality’s
housing department may be called upon to provide temporary accommodation.”
According to the municipality they still fine combing the affected areas to determine what other damages may
have been experienced in addition to the already reported cases.
