Mooibank residents receive eviction notice

It’s been over a year since they were moved to Mooibank Azanaville and allegedly told they would be a priority. However, all they have received after months of pleading with the municipality were Jojo water tanks.
The small community has turned its newfound place into a home, despite the difficulties.
Unfortunately, what they feared most has become a reality; the residents have been handed an eviction notice.
Most of the residents are unemployed and have trouble making ends meet.
Having to move all over again would be an extremely tough challenge.
“Before they moved us, a councillor told us we would find allocated stands, water and other basic needs.
It’s been months and nothing has changed,” the residents said.
Community members say they had been to the municipality to avoid the current situation but didn’t get any answers.
“What is supposed to happen to us?” a resident asked.
“The municipality has always known we were here. They know exactly why they moved us here; we are not willing to give up without a fight, ” another resident lamented.
“Although the council provides basic services on a humanitarian basis, they have still settled there illegally.
In fact, the Department of Land Affairs brought a standing court order for them to leave the area. The only obstacle preventing the authorities from removing them is the Covid-19 lockdown regulations,” William Maphosa, the previous municipal spokesperson, told the Herald last October.
The Herald asked the municipality for comment but had received none by publication time.
