Primary school learners display creative talent in art competition
A total of 315 entries were received, showing the need for such an art competition – the first of its kind in the past 15 years.
Creativity was on full display last Friday, 30 September, when the winners of the inaugural Daily Coffee Cafe-, Uniprop- and Lions International Potchefstroom’s art competition for primary school learners were revealed.
The artworks in all categories were a sight to behold and illustrated the depth of talent in Potchefstroom. A total of 315 entries were received, showing the need for such an art competition – the first of its kind in the past 15 years.
This art competition was open to all primary school learners under the theme: “In the coffee shop/In die koffiewinkel.”
The Lions competition was open to learners who will be 11 to 13 years old on 15 November 2022, with the theme: “Peace Poster – Lead with Compassion”.
The art competition originated as a colouring competition but soon transformed into a much bigger event. Mrs Hyla Alberts and her husband, Nico Alberts, owners of Daily Coffee Company, approached Pieter and Talje Marais of Uniprop to help launch a colouring competition for primary school pupils to market her business to the parents.
The artworks that won top 3 places in various categories:
Pieter spoke to Deon van Tonder for advice on hosting a community service-oriented project where donations and sponsorship are received. That was where Deon, Pieter and Talje decided to evolve the colouring competition into an art competition, running concurrently with the Lions Club Peace-Poster competition.
The success and level of participation have now necessi- tated this competition to be hosted annually. Next year, secondary school learners will also be able to enter.
This year, Laerskool Mooirivier, Potchefstroom Central School, Potchefstroom Primary, Laerskool President Pretorius, Bert’s Bricks Primary and the Promosa Community Youth Centre participated in the competition.
