NWU student (17) in hospital after hit and run incident in Hoffman Street
Police arrested the 19-year-old driver of the vehicle, shortly after the incident, after he fled the scene of the accident.
A 17-year-old NWU student was hit by a vehicle this past Saturday (5 August) in a hit-and-run incident in Hoffman Street.
The 19-year-old driver of the vehicle, fled the scene of the accident but was arrested shortly after.
Sandile Mokoena (17), who is a first year Pharmacy student and a resident of Hombré, was on his way to the hostel, crossing the road at around 17:20, when he was hit by the vehicle in Hoffman Street.
NWU Protection Services were first on the scene, whereafter ER24, Mooirivier Beskerming First Responder and Provincial EMRS attended to Mokoena who had sustained numerous serious injuries.
Mokoena was transported by ambulance to Potchefstroom Hospital and was in ICU before being moved to the general ward yesterday.
According to NW police spokesperson, Capt. Sam Tselanyane, police found paramedics at the scene attending to Mokoena. Bystanders then gave a description of the vehicle and the police went on a lookout.
“The vehicle was spotted in Nelson Mandela Ave driving recklessly and a chase ensued until Mooirivier Mall. The 19-year-old driver was arrested and charged with driving whilst under the influence of alcohol and reckless or negligent driving.”
The 19-year old motorist is scheduled to appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrates court this morning,7 August.
