Sarafina Secondary School expected to open this January
According to the North West Department of Education spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane, the school is expected to be ready to welcome learners on Wednesday, 17 January.
The complicated story of Sarafina Secondary School has been filled with numerous obstacles since the school was first announced in November 2020.
After a prolonged period of construction, where learners had to be temporarily platooned to other nearby schools in the area, the school will be able to open for the 2024 academic year.
According to the North West Department of Education spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane, the school is expected to be ready to welcome learners on Wednesday, 17 January.
The North West MEC for Education, Ms. Viola Motsumi, visited the Sarafina Secondary School on Tuesday, 9 January. Dignitaries from Public works, DBSA, the Department of Education head office and district staff were also present.
“The aim of the visit was to assess progress of the partial hand over before the schools reopen next week. Moreover, this partial handover will decrease overcrowding in some schools in Ikageng Township,” stated Molokwane.
The Herald previously reported on the Sarafina Secondary school in December 2023, where community members were concerned regarding the delays in construction and safety of the school.
At that stage an official date for re-opening of the school was not yet communicated.
Molokwane explained that the reason for the delay of the opening of the school was due to contractual obligations, as well as business forum disturbances that delayed the process of construction of this school.
According to department norms and standards the school will have 14 staff members.
“The main target with regards to learners are grade 8 and 9. The school will progress accordingly until this cohort reaches matric. The school will offer senior phase general subjects as prescribed by CAPS,” stated Molokwane.
