Operation Shanela: 1,128 Suspects arrested in province-wide crackdown

Operation Shanela, conducted from May 13 to 19, 2024, in Potchefstroom, resulted in the arrest of 1,128 suspects for crimes including rape, murder, assault, and theft.

A recent extensive law enforcement initiative, Operation Shanela, has led to the arrest of 1,128 suspects across the province. The operation, conducted between Monday, 13 May, and Sunday, 19 May 2024, targeted a range of criminal activities, resulting in significant outcomes.
The arrests covered various offenses, including rape, murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), malicious damage to property, burglary of residential and business premises, possession of drugs, theft from motor vehicles, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Among the apprehended, 547 suspects were wanted for serious contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH, common assault, and both house and business robbery.

Additionally, 363 suspects were detained during detective suspect raiding operations, and 73 undocumented individuals were taken in for processing.
The arrests were made through a series of strategic actions, including stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, patrols, vehicle checkpoints, and inspections of licensed liquor premises and second-hand goods dealers. The operation also involved the tracing of wanted suspects and other targeted interventions.
During these operations, law enforcement officers confiscated various illegal items, including drugs, dangerous weapons, 26 cell phones, copper cables, 84 rounds of ammunition, three firearms, liquor, and one vehicle. Additionally, four illegal liquor outlets, commonly known as shebeens, were shut down.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Police Commissioner, commended the dedication and hard work of all the members, units, and other role players involved in Operation Shanela. He expressed his gratitude for their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the province’s residents.
“The success of Operation Shanela is a testament to the relentless efforts of our law enforcement agencies to combat crime and enhance public safety. The cooperation and dedication demonstrated by our teams are truly commendable,” said Lieutenant General Kwena.
The results of Operation Shanela highlight the ongoing commitment of the province’s law enforcement agencies to maintaining order and protecting the community from criminal activities.
