5. Harvester of Sorrow
This song off their …And Justice for All album is one of those classic Metallica songs with the elongated intro’ of frenetic electric guitar and pulsating drums that captures the listener. Some might argue that this track’s intro’ is too long before James Hetfield starts singing, which is why it is not always that highly rated. Take a listen to this and take note of the great lead riff and solos in the song.

4. The Memory Remains
This song is known by many fans, but it never quite ranks up into the echelons of Metallica greatness. Maybe, it is the short length of the song or its creepy outro of na, na, nas. Nevertheless, its beauty is in its simplicity and its strong chorus and intro’, where Hetfield thunders out vocals to grab the listeners’ attention. The lead riff also sweetens the deal further.

3. The Day that Never Comes
Metallica had been way off their best for more than a decade, as fans have been wanting the band to return to their roots with an epic song that tells a story, not only in words but also in their music. The band went back to what makes them great and delivered this diamond of a track on their most recent album, “Death Magnetic”. The track was released in 2008 and focuses on war and is various demands – letting go of the ones you love, killing innocent victims and so forth. A great song with a captivating dual guitar intro’ from Hetfield and Kirk Hammett.

2. Whiplash
Whiplash is what personified Metallica as a band in the early 80s – thrashing riffs, pounding drums and break-neck rhythm guitar. James’ voice on this track is much rawer and showcases thrash metal at its finest. A great track to pump up the mood.

1. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
To some, this might not be an underrated track, but it loses out to other fan favourites like “Enter Sandman, “Master of Puppets” and “Nothing Else Matters” on regular top 5 lists. The song paints a picture of a mental hospital and the person’s struggles, there. In my mind, (pardon the pun) this song would be any other band’s biggest hit. This track has a great guitar intro’ with harmonics, a superb solo and aggressive vocals, to boot. A classic metal song – worth listening to, any day of the week.
