Reader’s letter: The ‘Community Protest’ narrative is a dangerous deflection

The Constitution protects the right to assemble, but it does not protect malicious campaigns aimed at undermining social cohesion or inciting hostility.

Concerned resident writes:

The Herald’s coverage of the June 30 march in Potchefstroom (July 2, 2026) framed the event as a peaceful exercise of constitutional rights by a concerned community. With respect, this narrative is deeply misleading and amounts to a dangerous deflection.

Firstly, the claim that this was a legitimate community protest ignores the origins of the call to action. The “March and March” organisers have been linked to external funding with interests far removed from the struggles of Potchefstroom residents. Labeling this a simple constitutional exercise obscures the reality: the protest agenda skirts the boundaries of sedition by targeting foreign nationals and promoting division. The Constitution protects the right to assemble, but it does not protect malicious campaigns aimed at undermining social cohesion or inciting hostility.

Secondly, your report fails to interrogate the local opportunism that hijacked the march. The so-called “community leaders” who delivered the memorandum are hardly the voice of the grassroots. These are individuals positioning themselves for municipal contracts and using the anti-foreigner sentiment as a platform to campaign for upcoming local government elections. The “unsuspecting hungry youth” who marched were exploited as pawns in this political game, their genuine frustrations weaponised to serve the selfish agendas of a few.

By failing to report on these underlying dynamics, the media confirms and amplifies a false narrative. It was not “the community raising its voice.” It was a politically motivated, opportunistic mobilisation that used the plight of the unemployed and a xenophobic agenda as cover.

A free press has a duty to look beyond the placards and police presence. Your readers deserve the full story – including who is funding these protests, whose political careers are being advanced, and why the voices of the marginalised are being cynically manipulated.
