All netball fans are invited this coming Monday as Varsity Netball action comes to town. The NWU Pukke will play their first home match against the University of Stellenbosch at the SANDF Kopanelo Hall on Monday 14 September at 19:00.

Be sure to catch the match between UJ and UP-Tuks that will start the action in Potchefstroom at 17:30.

NWU Pukke got their Varsity Netball title charge underway on a bittersweet note.

They lost their first match of the campaign against title holders UFS-Kovsies 47-38 on Sunday 6 September at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein. They came back with grit and determination the next evening as they beat UJ 60-52 in a tense encounter at the same venue.

This leaves NWU Pukke in sixth place with five points after two games. This might not be the ideal start but the tournament is now only in its early stages with plenty of time to hit peak form. UP-Tuks currently leads the standings with 10 points with Kovsies in second place at 9 points.

Kovisies, the defending champions played a tactically superior game to Pukke in their first match and were deserved winners. They dominated from the first quarter and it was only in the latter stages that Pukke hauled in the large deficit. Kovsies lead increased to 11 points at one stage as Tanya Mostert and her Kovsies-teammates controlled the match. Pukke second match of the tournament was far better for the Potchefstroom ladies who celebrated a hard fought win.

This was a turnaround from the first match as they led for the entire match. Lentsa Motau was awarded the player of the match after a fine all-round display.

The main theme of the evening on Monday will be “Show Your Colours” where prizes can also be won.The #ShowYourColours initiative is an invitation for all varsity sport fanatics to dress in their local university’s colours, get behind their teams and win big on match day.

Tickets are available at the venue for R20, but are limited. Tickets can also be bought beforehand at the High Performance Institute, room 114. Singer and songwriter Nadine will also provide the entertainment during the night. Be sure to wear your Puk colours!
