The Proteas Women’s chance to become champions on home soil in the Quadrangular series in Potchefstroom was dented when they lost to India by eight wickets in a one sided contest today (Sunday 21 May)
It was not to be for SA coach, Hylton Moreeng’s ladies who after batting first could only manage 156 all out from 40 overs as India’s bowlers made great use of the conditions early on. The stand out bowlers for India were Jhulan Goswami (3-22) and Poonam Yadav (3-32) that put SA on the back foot.
Only Suné Luus with 55 (74) and Mignon du Preez 30 (49) could withstand the Indian bowlers with a 73 run partnership. Things then went south for the South African’s as they lost their next seven wickets for 66 runs in a terrible batting collapse.
India’s Mithali Raj with an unbeaten 62 (79) and Punam Raut also unbeaten on 70 (92) steered India to a comfortable win. Raj, who also captained India for the 100th time today, was fittingly at the crease to hit the winning runs.
In the end India was more composed in the pressure situations and they can now claim the trophy after two weeks of exciting women’s cricket action in Potchefstroom.
