Potchefstroom has always been a hotbed for javelin talent and South Africa’s Jo-Ané van Dyk and Sunette Viljoen did their best on the world stage this past weekend.
At the Lahti Games in Finland on Friday night, Javelin throw star Viljoen cemented her place on top of the charts this year in preparation for the World Championships in London in August. Viljoen won with a distance of 62.18m, which was more than three metres ahead of her nearest challenger.

Young NWU-Pukke star thrower, Van Dyk, who was a silver medalist at last year’s World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, finished sixth in the Women’s Javelin Throw at the FBK Games in the Netherlands after producing a great throw of 54.33m.

It was a case of both new and established talent showing their skills and giving a good indication of the great shape that women’s javelin is in the country.
Both these two women’s athletes are under the masterful tutelage of local javelin coach Terseus Liebenberg who continues to produce world class stars.
