Chess is a game of skill, precision and strategy and is soon to be one of the tools that will help to empower the youth in Potch.
The first steps to this renewal of chess were taken on Saturday 3 June when, MAS (Music, Arts and Sports) organised a chess tournament that was held at Tlokwe Youth Centre for Excellence, famously known as Die Komando.
The tournament attracted the interest of players from most parts of Potchefstroom.

MAS is an NPC (non-profit company) founded by Yvonne and Jeremiah Sewelo with the aim of empowering the youth by encouraging them to realise their full potential and utilise their God-given talents to transform and better their lives.
The purpose of such tournaments is to give players a platform to continuously practise and sharpen their skills, which will ultimately turn them into world class players.
Studies have proven a strong correlation between chess and academic excellence, especially in learning areas like mathematics.
‘As MAS, we intend to explore and use that link to help our children improve their academic performance through playing chess,’ said Jeremiah.
‘We are working together with various stakeholders to set up a formal playing structure for chess in our area. Our long-term goal is to have a chess league where players will be able to play on a weekly basis,’ he added.
