The 29th Summer Universiade Games hosted in Taipei from 19 to 30 August will once again showcase the world’s top talent with athletes from over 140 countries participating in the event.
The Summer Universiade is hosted every two years and is second only to the Olympic Games in terms of its magnitude on the sporting calendar.
A handful of NWU-Pukke’s top athletes will also compete in the colours of South Africa and will want to show that SA has some of the best talent at university level.

Three female athletes and six male athletes from Pukke made the cut for the national squad. They are: Julia du Plessis (high jump), Jo-Ané van Dyk (javelin), Letitia Janse van Vuuren (hammer throw), Pieter Conradie (400 metres), Henco Uys (800 m), Tshepang Makhethe (hammer throw), Johan Grobler (javelin), Mpho Links (high jump) and Leon Laubser (javelin).

‘It’s a great feeling to be chosen to represent the country at the biggest stage of University Sports. The biggest aim, of course, is to make the final and, once we’re there, we will work on improving our PB of 71.28 m. I failed to make the team back in 2015 so this will be an opportunity to make the most of the experience,’ said a delighted Tshepang Makhethe who will look to make an impact on the world stage.
