Before the Covid-19 pandemic stalled school sport indefinitely in 2020, North West Secondary Schools Hockey was busy putting the pro-vince’s top schools players through their paces with trials. Although things did not go as initially planned, the top brass decided to shake things up with a new virtual platform for the players who passed the u.16 hockey trials. Say hello to a first-of-its-kind high-performance online programme.
“This new virtual platform is to engage with the selected squads in North West for 2020. The reasoning behind it is the Covid-19 pandemic, which restricts our players in physically attending the provincial high-performance programme in the respective districts,” stated Jacques Nel, the vice-chairperson of North West Secondary Schools Hockey.
“Before the pandemic, the associ
ation had successful u.18 and u.16 boys and girls provincial trials. We selected the number of players, who were honoured by being in the squads, although we could not complete the u.14 boys and girls provincial trials because of the outbreak,” added Nel.
The plan for the u.14 players to join this platform is to gather certain information from the schools and the North West Primary Schools Hockey Association, to invite the selective group of players.
“We will be working on a seven-week programme, which will run on a three-week cycle. The first week will be a Zoom Webinar with information sharing. The second week will be a workshop, where the players and the provincial coaches will engage on Zoom, on an interactive basis . Lastly, the third week is an off-week for the players, but a planning session for the coaches,” explained Nel.
