Lions and Dragons match abandoned due to wet outfield

The wet outfield due to yesterday's constant rain was like a proverbial wet blanket on the Dragons' hope of a final spot.

With the sun starting to creep out at the JB Marks Oval, the wet outfield was still deemed unfit for play in the crucial CSA One Day Cup match between the Dragons and the Lions in Potchefstroom today.

The sun was shining at 14:00, but the game was still called off due to the wet outfield.

The rain, which fell yesterday and early in the morning today (Sunday, 4 April), stopped at around 8:30, but all the efforts of ground staff were in vain as the umpires called off the match.

This was just the result that the Dragons did not want as they needed a win to progress the final. The fans who came to support their local team was also left bitterly disappointed at not even a single ball being bowled.

Looking at the context of the match and what was at stake, surely something could have been done to ensure that a shortened game could be played – maybe allowing an extra day to finish such a theoretical semi-final could be looked at for future tournaments?

It was quite an auspicious way to end the season or the Dragons, who just missed out on their first final – through conditions out of their control.

Their form in coloured kit was quite pleasing in patches, whilst their red ball form will need some work ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Dragons will also look to bring in some new talent for next season as they will want to push for a place out of the relegation zone.
