Tegnies take down Boys High to claim Classic Clash title on home soil

THS were all over Boys High from the start and established a 22-0 lead at half-time.

THS Potchefstroom’s first rugby team regained the FNB Classic Clash trophy after beating Potchefstroom Boys High 27-5 in a relatively one-sided encounter at THS Potchefstroom yesterday (Saturday, 14 May).

The boys from THS were pumped up for this encounter and in front of their school and on their home field, they produced a superb first half display to clinch the cup.

THS were all over Boys High from the start and established a 22-0 lead at half-time. Tries from outside centre  Jason Mncube, eighthman, Pako Lekalakala, and two from scrum half Lesego Mosala, took the wind out of Boys High’s sails.

It was no surprise when THS opened the scoring through slick hands in the backline that put Mncube in for the opening try. They kept that momentum going through a brace from Mosala.

The scrum-half’s tries were due to some quick thinking – his ability to see opportunities shining through in a superb first half performance.

Lekalakala put in a man of the match performance with his bulldozing runs keeping Boys High on their toes for the entire match. Thapelo “Soldier” Sibiya the THS tight head prop, did his nickname justice with some monster ball carries as well.

THS and Leopards Academy flyhalf, Khaya Jonas, also had a stunning game as he kept Boys High on the back foot with smart wind assisted kicks from both feet. He is definitely a general in the fly-half position as he seamlessly dictated play.

The second half was a tighter affair, but THS kept control with another five pointer from wing, Lereko Kwago. Kwago ran about 60 metres to dot down after excellent back line play. Mncube also converted one of the five tries.

“We started as if there was no end and scored 22 unanswered points in the first 20 min of the match. Overall we controlled the scrum, lineouts and general game very well for a brilliant victory,” added THS Potchefstroom head coach, Drikus Viljoen.

Potchefstroom Boys High though tasted victory in the two other matches played on the day. The juniors (u.15’s) won 22-12 and College’s second team won 29-7.
