Best of the best in bowls

Randburg Bowls Club hosted the final of the Champion of Champions two-day competition.

The annual event was organised by the Johannesburg Bowls Association and drew competitors from far and wide, including international bowlers who have won medals at the Commonwealth Games and World Bowls.

Beaming with pride at his victory as Novice Champion of Champions was Randburg Bowl’s own club president, Laurie Stafford.

“It was a wonderful match; very enjoyable and played in the best of spirits,” said Stafford after the game.

Other Randburg players who came very close to winning were Lavinia Roberts and Bev Harrison, both losing in the tiebreaker of the semi-finals.

Bowls is gaining popularity among young and old. The club’s public relations spokesperson, Di Tollman, added, “Randburg has a comprehensive coaching setup. New bowlers are quickly put through their paces and shown the game of bowls. Randburg welcomes any potential new bowler looking for a new sport or hobby.”

The final results were:

  • Men’s Open: Bobby Donnelly (Wanderers) bt Hennie Bothma (Auckland Park)
  • Women’s Open: Esmé Steyn (Linden) bt Ashleigh Parks (Morningside)
  • Men’s Senior: Mike Redshaw (Italian Club) bt Billy Cunningham (Suburb Sports)
  • Women’s Senior: Sharon Glenn (Bedfordview) bt Gail Neilson (Ridge Park)
  • Men’s Novices: Laurie Stafford (Randburg) bt Bryan Coetzee (Italian Club)
  • Women’s Novices: Shirley Gamedze (Old Parktonians) bt Gail McLeod (Morningside)
