New project for change
Gathel Moyo has been living in Windsor for six years, and during his time there, he has realised the need for a new project that he believes will help better the community.
“We want to get rid of the stigma, stereotypes, and judgments people have about each other. We want to create awareness and tackle issues surround drug abuse, domestic violence and any sort of abuse, and even prostitution. We simply want to educate people about the ongoing issues in their community,” stated Moyo.
His love for the community started when he realised he wanted to be a social worker. Moyo is a second year student at University of South Africa.
He has over the past few years been involved with the clinic in Windsor as a counselor. Once he has started work at the recreation centre, he will have a bigger space to accommodate a lot more people. “My experience at the clinic made me want to do more for the community. I want to have a place that will allow for people who come once or twice for counseling at the clinic to continue to get counseling and for me to also follow up on their progress,” added Moyo. When Moyo is not volunteering at the clinic or working on his new community project he is working as a salesman, whilst completing his degree.
Ward councillor Laurette van Zijl stated she was very excited about having a new project at the centre. “It is a good idea. Even though I have not met Moyo yet, we have spoken about working together and we are meeting soon. He is very enthusiastic about this and I am looking forward to working with him on this. I hope that the people of Windsor will take the opportunity that is being offered to them.”
Moyo is yet to get sponsorship and enough help, but his passion and dedication to his craft are the key points to making his project prevail.
